The strongest prognostic marker of coronary heart disease: Evaluation of the calcifications in coronary arteries.
Through the assessment of the coronary arteries calcifications, we have the opportunity:
- To predict with a higher accuracy degree the possibility of “cardiac events” in asymptomatic middle-aged patients, of a moderate risk, as well as in diabetic patients.
- To rule out the possibility of acute coronary heart disease events at a percentage of up to 100% (with no presence of calcifications CCS:0).
- To guide and treat more correctly our patients, depending on the score.
In cases where the CCS is higher than 400 - for example, there is a high chance (over 90%) of a coronary disease in one vessel, at least, and further investigation is recommended.
The European Society of Cardiology in its latest guidelines based on these studies, recommends* the examination of CCS (Calcium coronary score) with last generation CT-scanners. The American Heart Association has established, the examination of coronary arteries calcification (CCS) as a preventive check on a regular basis, for the entire population *.
